Reflection Paragraph on Sources

My sources were very useful in finding my information. I found good sources because most of them were made by cancer societies or organizations. I used the skincancer.org website the most because on that website there was different links for more information. I think all of them were trustworthy because not one but all of them were made by organizations or societies. I did not have and bias websites because I would not list those. Although, they had doctors opinions on some of them. I did not have a problem with finding credible sources.

Reflection Paragraph on Process

I felt really good while I was searching for my information. Some things were difficult to research because I had to decide if that website was credible or not. I enjoyed the learning process of my project because I learned a lot of valuable information about Melanoma Skin Cancer. I also enjoyed working with my classmates that had a similar topic. I did not like some of the pictures that were shown because the stage of cancer differs; which meant that the cancer looks worst then others. If I did this over I would not change anything because this project explained so much to me. I really liked the information I discovered.

Reflection Paragraph on Findings

There was a lot of valuable information that I learned. I learned that there are three different types of skin cancer. One of those is Melanoma Skin Cancer; this type of skin cancer has different stages. Melanoma Skin Cancer can be fatal if it is not found in time or if it has spread to others parts of the body. Although, animals are similar to humans, there Melanoma Skin Cancer is found to be more like a tumor. There were no questions that I really found to wonder about. I feel great that I actually found out more information to help prevent others from getting Melanoma Skin Cancer. I really enjoyed researching this topic and I hope you all have enjoyed my findings.

Finding Paragraph 3

Most elderly people that have Melanoma skin cancer received excess amounts of sun exposure when they were in their teens. Melanoma Skin Cancer can infect anyone who receives a lot of sun. “This disease is also more common in people who live in areas that get large amounts of UV radiation from the sun.” (Medicine) This quote is important because it states that some states differ with the amount of sun that can shine in a day.  The sun is a major affect of Melanoma Skin Cancer. “Doctors encourage people to limit their exposure to natural UV radiation and to avoid artificial sources.” (Medicine)  This quote means that even though you go to the tanning beds you can still get Melanoma Skin Cancer.  “UV radiation from the sun causes premature aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to melanoma.” (Medicine) This quote states what UV radiation is and what it does to the skin.  According to research any age can have Melanoma Skin Cancer although, it is rare for a child to get infected.

Finding Paragraph 2

Although animals are similar to humans, their cancers are classified in different ways. In humans Melanoma Cancer is cured by surgery or medicine, but in dogs the cancer is left alone unless it is posing problems to the dog’s health. “Sometimes melanomas are categorized as a round cell tumor because they are typically round, raised, and darkly pigmented.” (Canine Cancer Organization) This quote states how a cancer cell is recognized in a dog. There was another website that stated that horses could get Melanoma skin Cancer also. “There may be a genetic basis for the development of certain cancers as certain breeds of dogs have been found to have a higher incidence of skin cancer.”(Canine Cancer Organization) This quote means that some dog breeds are more likely to get Melanoma than others. This is because of the genetics and some of the breeds are prone to it than others. Humans Melanoma Cancer is sometimes fatal to humans, but not as much dogs.  Melanoma skin cancer reacts in different ways for everybody, even animals.

Finding Paragraph 1

According to research, there are many different causes and cures of Melanoma Skin Cancer. Melanoma skin cancer can be removed if caught in time. "If it is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal."(The Skin Cancer Foundation) This quote means that if you go to visit the doctor and they do not see the cancer, then your health could depreciate. One main and more common causes of Melanoma skin cancer is the amount of sun exposure one receives. "Experts believe that much of the worldwide increase in melanoma is related to an increase in the amount of time people spend in the sun" (Medicine). This quote is important because if young adults go in the sun with out skin protection, that could harm them in the end. Going in the sun with out using skin protection is a brazen decision to make because you would be taking a chance that could kill you.  Melanoma Skin Cancer can be cured and the causes could be prevented; it is your choice--life or death.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #5

"These tumors demand immediate attention.  They are more common in dogs with heavily pigments coats (Airedale's, Scottish terriers, spaniels and schnauzers) because melanoma is derived from melanocytes –  the cells that provide pigment in the skin.  Sometimes melanomas are categorized as a round cell tumor because they are typically round, raised, and darkly pigmented. Tumors can be benign or malignant and can be located anywhere on the body. The cause of most skin cancers is unknown. Exposure to the sun has been shown to cause a higher incidence of three types of skin cancer: Squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and hemangioma. There may be a genetic basis for the development of certain cancers as certain breeds of dogs have been found to have a higher incidence of skin cancer. These include boxers, Scottish terriers, bull mastiffs, basset hounds, weimaraners, Kerry blue terriers and Norwegian elkhounds."
Canine Cancer Org., . "Canine Cancer." caninecancer.com. Canine Cancer, 2010. Web. 16 Nov 2010. <http://www.caninecancer.com/skincancer.html>.

These paragraphs are important because it explains the causes and what melanoma is on a dog. Melanoma Skin Cancer on a dog is similar to a tumor but on a human it is just normal skin cancer. There are similar causes of Melanoma on dogs and humans. For example, dogs can get skin cancer from too much sun exposure. Most skin cancer cannot be determined of the cause because there could be numerous reasons. Some breeds of dogs can have a more risk of getting melanoma skin cancer because of the genetics. There are seven different breeds listed in this quote. I think this quote is important because it shows that not only humans can get Melanoma Skin Cancer. This was a very useful website.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #4

"Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. If it is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal. While it is not the most common of the skin cancers, it causes the most deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that at present, about 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. In 2010, about 68,130 of these were invasive melanomas, with about 38,870 in males and 29, 260 in women."

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. Melanoma can be cured if caught on time.  If this cancer is not cured in time then it can spread across you body. Melanoma can be fatal if you do not give it the right amount of treatment. This quote is important because it gives valuable information about the male and female cases. It also states the number of new cases per year. Melanoma is reported to kill more people than any other type of skin cancer. This website is an important link because it is actually funded by the American Cancer Society.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #3

“Experts believe that much of the worldwide increase in melanoma is related to an increase in the amount of time people spend in the sun. This disease is also more common in people who live in areas that get large amounts of UV radiation from the sun. In the United States, for example, melanoma is more common in Texas than in Minnesota, where the sun is not as strong. UV radiation from the sun causes premature aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to melanoma. Artificial sources of UV radiation, such as sunlamps and tanning booths, also can cause skin damage and increase the risk of melanoma. Doctors encourage people to limit their exposure to natural UV radiation and to avoid artificial sources.”
"Melanoma." Medicinenet. MedicineNet inc, 1996. Web. 11 Nov 2010. <http://www.medicinenet.com/melanoma/article.htm>.
I think this article is aimed for young adults because they are mostly the one to go to tanning beds. This article is very detailed, and I think that this is informative and gives details on how you can have a better chance of getting skin cancer.  The quote states that if you go out and experience and extreme amount of sun or UV rays then you could possibly be in danger. It also says that tanning beds or artificial UV radiation could also cause damage. This quote even gives an example of where it is possible for more UV radiation then others across the United States.  The fact that doctors encourage you not to use tanning beds and other artificial UV rays; must mean that it is not good for your body. This article has more specific information. There are different categories with information under them. This website is a very good information source.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #2

"Melanoma is cancer that arises from the pigment-producing cells in the uppermost layer of the skin. These cells are called melanocytes. Melanoma that originates in the skin is called cutaneous melanoma. It also may occur in the eye, a condition called ocular melanoma or intraocular melanoma. In rare cases, melanoma may begin in the digestive tract called meninges, lymph nodes or other parts of the body where there are melanocytes. Ultraviolet radiation, which is present in sunlight and in tanning beds, probably sets off many cases of melanoma by causing genetic damage in melanocytes. Children and adolescents are especially sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet light."

"Melanoma." ucsfhealth.org. UCSF Health Organization, 26 Oct. 2010. Web. 11 Nov 2010. http://www.ucsfhealth.org/conditions/melanoma/index.html.

This is a paragraph from the article about Melanoma Skin Cancer. This article states where this type of skin cancer can infect. Melanoma Skin Cancer can infect many areas of the human body. Radiation is one of the ways you can receive Melanoma. Children are at risk more than most adults because they are not immune to the ultraviolet rays (the sun). Melanoma cells can be produced in your skin, your eyes, and some rare cases of in your digestive tract. This article also had the possible treatments for Melanoma. I thought this was a very precise article because it gave you definitions of words that you see when searching or asking a doctor. You should always be careful when going outside in the sun for long periods of time. Some young adults could care less about what they do to their body NOW, but when they get older they will realize.

Quote, paraphrase, and citation #1

Estimated new cases and deaths from melanoma in the United States in 2010:

New cases: 68,130
Deaths: 8,700
-National Cancer Institute

"Melanoma." Cancer.gov. National Cancer Institute, 2010. Web. 11 Nov 2010. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/melanoma.

I think this quote shows that Melanoma Skin Cancer is something you cannot play around with. This also shows that over eight thousand cases around the world become deadly. Melanoma Cancer is very dangerous and you have to know how to protect yourself. If you think about, 68,130 cases added together over three years would add up to a lot. That is the same for the death rate too.
